FrieslandCampina Ingredients, a global functional ingredient supplier, has announced the latest launch of a product under its Biotis brand, Biotis GOS-OP High Purity. FrieslandCampina Ingredients specifically developed the prebiotic to drive innovation in the growing gut health supplements market. Boasting a galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) content of over 90%, Biotis GOS-OP High Purity is the company’s purest prebiotic ingredient.
 
According to FrieslandCampina, citing market research firm Innova Market Insights, two-thirds of consumers recognize that good gut health is key to achieving overall well-being. Prebiotics are a dietary fiber designed to feed beneficial bacteria in the gut and influence the balance of the gut microbiome, providing benefits on gut health and mental wellbeing. Smaller yet efficacious formulations are a challenge due to technical limitations related to the volume of an active ingredient needed, especially in gummies, tablets, and capsules, FrieslandCampina noted.
 
With the GOS content of the latest product typically reaching 94%, thanks to a patent-pending process, research has substantiated that Biotis GOS-OP High Purity can achieve clinical efficacy at doses as low as two grams, according to a consumer concept study run by the company this year, enabling brands to create effective supplements that meet consumer needs.
 
This process also reduces the lactose content of GOS to less than 5%, supporting low-lactose formulations which are popular among certain consumers. Additionally, the ingredient has a long shelf life, high heat and acid stability with optimal bulk density and particle size, and a clean sensory profile, supporting formulation in a range of appealing and compact supplement formats, the company reports.
 
GOS has been compared to other prebiotics and has been evidenced to be more bifidogenic (supportive of the growth of Bifidobacterium strains) than other prebiotics on the market.
